Madonna col Bambino e i santi Giovanni Battista e Girolamo e la donatrice Ludovica Trotti

The “Virgin and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Jerome and the donor Trotti” (Ferrara, Pinacoteca Nazionale), also known as “Pala Trotti” was commissioned by Ludovico Trotti and his wife to Garofalo, who terminated it in 1517 for the chapel of San Francesco in Ferrara. Despite critics have often maintained that both the donors appear in the painting, is still uncertain if it has been painted in different times; on the contrary, there is no doubt in attributing it to Garofalo. In this work, the artist has absorbed Raphael models, especially in the gentle and delicate figures or in the plastic shapes of the Virgin and Child, even though  the severe composition is the proof that his artistic formation developed in Ferrara.
