Cattura di Cristo
Garofalo's “Taking of Christ” (Ferrara, San Francesco) dates back to 1524 and it was executed for the Dome of San Francesco in Ferrara. The drama of this episode is accentuated by the soldiers, with their colours and expressions that recalls Dosso Dossi, totally contrasting the sweetness embrace between Jesus and Judes portrayed by Raphael. The fortune of this painting is testified by the copious number of engravings realized during the 19th Century, that allowed to discover the landscape on the background and the dating, since they both went lost due to the bad conditions of the canvas.
During the restoration, they found its sinopia, that confirmed the dating of this work and all the modifications that have been made before the final result.
