In a first moment, the “Nativity” (Ferrara, Pinacoteca Nazionale) was kept in the Church of San Francesco in Ferrara and it was certainly executed by Garofalo after his second journey to Rome around 1512– also related by Vasari. This journey had a deep impact in moving Garofalo towards Roman models: in the noble poses of the Sacred Family there is a clear reference to Raphael classicism, even though the presence of Boccaccino and Costa or Giorgione's landscapes is quite evident, too.
